Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and serum inflammatory markers of cardiovascular disease.

چکیده
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental and occupational carcinogens produced by the incomplete combustion of organic materials, such as coal and petroleum product combustion, tobacco smoking, and food cooking, that may be significant contributors to the burden of cardiovascular disease in human populations. The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between ten monohydroxy urinary metabolites of four PAHs and three serum biomarkers of cardiovascular disease (fibrinogen, homocysteine, and white blood cell count). Using data on 3219 participants aged 20 years and older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2004 dataset, the associations between PAH metabolites and serum inflammatory markers were analyzed using the Spearman correlations and multiple linear regression modeling. The PAH metabolites of naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene each showed both positive and negative correlations with homocysteine, fibrinogen, and white blood cell count (correlation coefficient range: -0.077-0.143) in nonsmoking participants. Using multiple linear regression models adjusted for age, gender, race/ethnicity, and body mass index, estimates of weighted geometric means of inflammatory marker levels were not significantly different between high and low levels (75th vs. 25th percentiles) for all PAH metabolites in nonsmoking subjects. The results of this study do not provide evidence for a relationship between PAH exposure (as measured by urinary levels of PAH metabolites) and serum biomarkers of cardiovascular disease after controlling for tobacco use.

Association of Exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Inflammation, Oxidative DNA Damage and Renal-pulmonary Dysfunctions in Barbecue Makers in Southern Nigeria
Background: Multiple organ dysfunctions have been linked to exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and oxidative stress (OS), oxidative DNA damage, and inflammatory response to PAH have been implicated. The biomarkers of OS (malondialdehyde (MDA), total plasma peroxide (TPP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO), oxidative stress index (OSI)); 8-hy...

Certain substances from the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) group are major inducers of respiratory tract carcinogenesis. The presented are the results of a serological epidemiological study aimed at monitoring the levels of anti-PAH antibodies and antibodies to PAH-DNA adducts in serum. The patients studied belonged both to the group of those with known lung disease (COPD and lung canc...
متن کاملBiomarkers of occupational exposure to air pollution, inflammation and oxidative damage in taxi drivers.
Exposure to environmental pollutants has been recognised as a risk factor for cardiovascular events. 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) is a biomarker of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from traffic-related air pollution. Experimental studies indicate that PAH exposure could be associated with inflammation and atherogenesis. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the b...
متن کاملA Systematic Review on the Effects of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons on Cardiometabolic Impairment
BACKGROUND Various epidemiological studies have shown that exposure to environmental pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) might increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and their risk factors. This study aims to systematically review the association of PAH exposure with metabolic impairment. METHODS Data were collected by searching for relevant studies in in...
متن کاملRisk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Pasta Products Consumed in Nigeria
Background: The present study aimed to quantitatively determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in pastas consumed in Nigeria with the view of estimating the daily intake amount and the possible risks to consumers. Methods: Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in locally produced and imported pasta using a GC-Mass Spectrometer. Estimation of daily intake was done on...
